Phyllis Nelson,
Cook Extraordinaire
Phyllis graciously volunteered her time this summer to do cooking for Dare to Care. She prepared many of her recipes from her days as a school cook.
Phyllis is currently living in Anchorage, Alaska, with her family. She is from North Bend, Oregon, on the southern Oregon coast. She was a professional cook in the North Bend School District prior to her retirement. She cooked breakfast and lunch for elementary school children for 15 years.
Her tenure as a cook was prior to the time that the food was shipped to schools from a central location. She prepared all of the breakfasts and lunches from scratch; there was absolutely no pre-made food. She loved cooking for the children and the children not only loved her cooking, but frequently were joined by their parents at school for lunch.
“I’ve had many requests over the years from the children for my recipes,” she said. “I really enjoyed cooking again for the Dare to Care Summer Meals Program.”
