A Happy Student

Here is a story of one student benefiting
from your contributions to No Child Goes Hungry!

My name is Jamie Kitzman, and I am a teacher at Machetanz Elementary School. Some of my students come to school with nothing and go home to nothing.

One day my school nurse asked if I thought I had any students that would benefit from food packages going home with them for the weekend. I told her I had at least two that I thought would really appreciate the help.

I took the two boys into a room separately and showed them the food package that was going home for the weekend. I handed the package to one of the boys and his face lit up ... he was so excited to look at all of the items in the pack and know that they were just for him for the weekend. He took the items all out and planned how he was going to have this first, that next, and then save the others for last because they were his favorite. It was awesome for me to see his delight as he planned, rearranged, and planned again.

He left school that day knowing that we had our own little secret and as he walked out of the classroom he tapped his backpack and said, "Thanks Ms. Kitzman, I hope you have a good weekend and I know I will."

On Monday, he reported to me as soon as he could that the beef stew in the food pack was the best he ever had and he was so glad he saved the best for last in his plan. I truly appreciate the smile and excitement that the Dare to Care program has provided my student, even if he is just one, with a simple food package.

What a great program!! Thanks so much! ;)

Nurses Fighting Hunger Program

Cans of Beans

Dare to Care’s mission is to help ensure that ‘No Child Goes Hungry’ in our schools.  We know that there are many children who not only come to school with no food – but also go home to no food.  The one-time grant that allowed high school nurses access to food at the Food Bank last year has expired.

Dare to Care has taken over that program and opened it up to all school district nurses and FSSC’s.  The pictures you see on this page are samples of the food items we provide.

To Access Food:

  1. Download and complete form – ensuring you include your school name.
  2. Fax to the Food Bank at 907-277-7368. The Food Bank will then pull the inventory and load your car when you arrive.
  3. No money is required. All food has been paid for by Dare to Care.

Dare to Care asks that you please keep a tally of how many children are being fed through this program. Please use the Contact form on this website to inform us monthly how many children are benefiting. This information is needed for our fundraising and grant applications.

Thank you for all you do for our children!
